Coastal Estate Club House

Hermanus, South Africa

Home Owners Association Club House

Located on a previously under-developed and segregated parcel at the edge of an established Hermanus estate, this proposed club house sits along the boundary of Zwelihle and the town's light industrial area. The site is enclosed by dense, unmanaged vegetation—both indigenous and invasive—and bordered on its northern and western edges by an imposing boundary wall. An unfinished internal road defines the southern boundary, while essential services are located at the site's north-western corner. The conceptual starting point for the project is the image of a veranda in a garden — a quiet architectural gesture that blurs the line between interior and exterior. Inspired by the idea of open-air living, the design imagines a space for both summer picnics and warm winter gatherings, nestled within a lush, cultivated landscape. From this foundation, the architectural response begins with a simple linear mass, referencing traditional plan forms found throughout the estate and aligned with the estate's formal guidelines. This mass is conceived as an extruded volume, from which two rotated service elements are subtracted and shifted to define a clear separation between service and served spaces. The result is an openness to the south-facing garden. Gable ends on the narrow sides of the mass rise to echo the archetypal roof forms present within the estate, reinforcing the architectural language of the region. Lean-to structures extend from the main volume, pulling the threshold of the building outward to create a shaded transitional space.
