Project Pebl
The project is tucked away within a quiet residential estate and unfolds against a backdrop of manicured gardens and distant mountain silhouettes. Phase 1 of our involvement in the project comprises a series of five prototype homes, designed to balance simplicity, familiarity, and ease of living. Drawing inspiration from the vernacular architecture of the Western Cape and ensuring alignment with the current Estate Architectural Guidelines, the prototypes reference traditional domestic forms and soft, whitewashed finishes. The result is a collection of major gable forms and lean-to minor forms that together create a palette and profile that feels rooted and minimalist. Each home is designed with family living in mind. The layout includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area at the heart of the home. Living spaces are arranged to capture natural light and maintain visual connection to gardens and courtyards, enhancing the comfort of the space and the flow from one zone to another. A key concern for any small South African house is the dedicated braai area that is thoughtfully positioned to make the most of the summer sun while offering shelter from prevailing winter winds and rain. These outdoor "rooms" become key gathering points, extending the social life of the home and reinforcing the project's emphasis on liveability.
